Black Friday Die Die Die

Is this why we're suffering such a general feeling of ennui and disgust and apathy in the culture right now, the nagging feeling that we have no center and God has abandoned us and we therefore simply cannot consume enough goods and technology to try and fill the void? The answer seems rather obvious.

I don't even know what Kohl's is. I'm guessing some sort of mass-crap superstore, like Best Buy or Target or T.J. Maxx or a weird amalgam of all of those and it doesn't really matter because last Friday they opened at 4 a.m. for the mad rush of Black Friday shoppers, because if there's one thing you want to do when your body is groggy and sleep tugs at your heart and your dreams have turned vacant and sad, it's grope cheap waffle makers before sunrise.

Wal-Mart opened at 5.

Practicing Safe E-Commerce

If you're headed to a brick-and-mortar store or a restaurant, don't leave a receipt on the table, and be sure to check your credit card bill to make sure the staff didn't heist your credit card number. Those are common-sense behaviors for real-world commerce, but similar security measures are in order when shopping online.

Hearts set to resist bid for Banks from Rangers

8 Agree with you Chas, why Perdo has gone on his hols when we are 'supposedly' trying to get a new manager in while also trying to get rid of a few players and a couple more on board?? It stinks of the crazies to me but perhaps we should all be used to the smell of sh@@te by now!The moth (#10) is also bang on the money, I hope, with this Banks story. West Coast trying to create an issue, no real evidence of interest anywhere. We have an absolute need for Banksy right now. Can you imagine if he and Velika left? We really would have a fight on our hands.... With Gretna! .

Two murders and two life sentences won't alter one convict's ...

At the center of this movement is J.P. Borda, a 31-year-old software analyst who lives in Dallas. Borda started blogging in 2004 during his National Guard deployment in Afghanistan as a way to keep in touch with family and friends. He now runs the site milblogging.com, an aggregator of military-related blogs from around the world. There are more than 1,400 military blogs, Borda says, and most share a common goal: to take on the mainstream media.

The way Borda sees it, the media tend to ignore positive news coming out of Iraq while overplaying negative stories. "It's tough for veterans. You turn on the news, and there's a lot of negative coverage," he says. "It's frustrating to hear that when there's so much positive going on there."

Military blogs offer a boots-on-the-ground alternative, and Borda says they are catching on because many people have lost their trust in what they see as a leftist, anti-military media.

Can Obama break their prison bars?

The calculations are based on figures for 2003 (the latest available from the Council of Europe). With a prison population in England and Wales of 80,000, if we imprisoned at the same rate as France, the prison population would be 91,113. If custody were used at the same rate as in Scotland, there would be 88,142 in jail. Socialist Spain has the highest rate per 1,000 crimes and if her rate applied in England and Wales the prison population would be about 369,000."

WSI board: Time to get cracking and correct the mess

Could anyone who has followed the months-long soap opera not believe that serious action - including administrative restructuring - needs to take place now? There is enough blame to go around, but this is not a blame game. Sometimes it is best to start over, and the management culture and structure at WSI must be changed. The agency directors are the only ones who can do it.The North Dakota Century Code is clear: "The board shall appoint the director of the organization. The director is subject to the supervision and direction of the board and serves at the pleasure of the board."This is where Gov. John Hoeven also is involved. More from the Century Code: "The governor shall make the necessary appointments to ensure the term of office of members (of the board) ... ."While there doesn't seem to be a mechanism for the governor to fire members of the board, he needs to strongly encourage them (or continue to do so) to take action that will stop the juvenile nonsense at WSI.

Britons Face Billion-Pound Interest Payback

One in four people is struggling with their debts as Britons collectively face a 93bn annual bill for interest.

At the same time, around three million people have taken out a debt consolidation loan to try to get on top of their borrowings.

Borrowing through credit cards, loans, overdrafts and mortgages has hit almost 1.4 trillion, according to comparison website uSwitch.com.

An estimated 9.5m people had "maxed out" on one form of credit during the past six months, while 38% have had a credit card application rejected, the group claims.

But nearly two-thirds of these failed to close down their existing credit facilities, and instead went on to rack up a further 2,300 of debt on average.

Overall, the research found that the average household has now amassed unsecured debts of 4,281.

Buying a home with a new job? Self-cert mortgage needed?

A reader from London is about to buy a new home, but her job is changing so she wants to know if it will affect the mortgage she has lined up. Drawing on years of experience, mortgage adviser Katie Tucker - technical manager at fee-free whole of market mortgage broker charcol.co.uk - takes her through the situation and what it means for her finances. Alice from London asks:: Hello. I am looking into buying a house with my friend. However, I am just about to move from permanent employment to contractual employment with my current employer, and will be changing jobs completely by the end of the year, or even becoming self-employed. If I get a mortgage offer in principle, what may happen if my circumstances are different by the time I apply for a formal agreement? Many thanks. Alice. Katie replies:: Good question Alice, and the lender would ask on the form if anything has materially changed since you got your Agreement in Principle.

Growing health center gets financial shot in the arm

That is, her health is not always the greatest, and she lacks medical insurance at her job.

"I used to want to be rich," said Sexton, of Charlestown. "Now I just want insurance."

Sexton has the next best thing, at least. Her county is committed to try to help anyone back to health. The Family Health Center of Clark County has expanded, yet again, so much that it is short on space, yet again.

Sexton is one of at least 2,000 patients the center will serve this year. It offers everything from vital surgery to flu shots, eyeglasses, screenings, even referrals to other services. Typically uninsured, patients pay on a sliding scale, if they can pay. The place helped arrange free medicine for Sexton for a digestion problem.

"Without them, I don't know what I'd do," she said.

Trial looms in transfer of DWP funds

The city of Los Angeles lost a key legal argument Monday and now will have to go to trial to defend the annual transfer of about $30million in Department of Water and Power water-service revenue to the city's general fund.

The ruling by a Superior Court judge to deny the city's motion for summary judgment comes as another potential setback for an already cash-strapped city facing a $155 million budget deficit by June 30 and as much as $500 million next year.

Because of the uncertainty of the transfers, the city hasn't included them in the current budget, nor in its financial projections.

But the DWP case is set to go to trial March 26 and, pending the outcome, the utility has set aside $63.3 million representing two years of surplus water revenue slated for transfer to city coffers.
