Alicia Keys Reigns At NAACP Image Awards; Plus Britney Spears ...

Alicia Keys took home four trophies from the NAACP Image Awards, held at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium Thursday night. She won the Outstanding Album and Outstanding Female Artist prizes, as well as the top video and song awards. Other honorees included Chris Brown, Jordin Sparks, Denzel Washington and Janet Jackson. Washington and his "Great Debaters" co-star Jurnee Smollett won the Best Actor and Actress prizes for film, while Jackson received the Best Supporting Actress honor for her work in "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?" ...

As Britney Spears' father extended control over her affairs in Los Angeles on Thursday, a New York attorney attempted to undo them by taking the conservatorship to federal court. Claiming he represents the singer — despite a judge already deciding she's unable to retain counsel of her own just yet — attorney Jon Eardley filed a claim that the singer's conservatorship deprives her of her civil liberties, since she's been denied the right to meet freely with whom she chooses (as her father has the power to restrict visitors); make and receive phone calls (since a restraining order prevents manager Sam Lutfi from contacting her); drive a car (since her father hired security to do that for her); and gain access to money or credit cards (since her finances are being handled by her trust).

Winning the Credit Card Game

It seems the better people get at paying off their credit card balances each month, the nastier the companies get. Why? This is because the better you are at paying off your balance every month, the less profit for the company. Companies are responding by becoming more creative in finding ways to make money off of you. Thus, it is more important than ever to master the rules of the game.

Rule 1: Don't be a revolver.
The first rule of credit cards is avoiding the evil "balance." Carrying a balance means paying far more than you should for everything you charge to your card. And it is one of the fastest ways to fall deep in debt.

Are you what the credit card companies call a revolver -- someone who carries a balance -- or are you a freeloader, someone who pays off their balance every month? With any luck, you are a freeloader.

Times Writers Group: Bachmann's mailer cost us

Mine sure has. In December every day brought catalogs (free shipping for last-minute shoppers!), credit card applications (gift now, pay later), cards and letters, and the usual bills.

One thing I received that I wasn't expecting was a mailing from my congressional representative, 6th District Rep. Michele Bachmann. I'm sure if you live in her district you received one also. It was a full-color, glossy cardstock, trifold brochure on Internet safety and, of course, featured a picture of her carefully coifed visage.

For the life of me I can't figure out why Bachmann felt it necessary to spend money on photography, production, printing and postage to send out information that is not needed by constituents who don't use the Internet and is easily found elsewhere by those who do.

Exchange Students Find a New Way to Deal With Germans

Her vote in the next election, she says, would go to Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

But the students are unrelenting. Do you think it's good, the way Americans consume natural resources? Bashore says no. Do you approve of the death penalty? Bashore says she prefers the German system. Do Americans support the Iraq war? Bashore tells the students about anti-war demonstrations on her campus. This sets the students at ease, and the next thing they want to know is why Americans eat so much fast food and whether they too have organic grocery stores.

A Long Slog

The same scenario repeats itself in the next hour, when Bashore visits an 11th-grade class. She introduces herself and passes around her photos. A student asks the first question: "How do you feel about Bush and the policies of his government?" When Bashore criticizes the administration, another student adds: "No one supports him.
