Cruise lines now offer healthier foods to draw boomers

Royal Caribbean in January did away with its midnight buffets, but the famed concept lives on in other ships. Those looking to get moving on Royal Caribbean ships can consult virtual trainer kiosks and self-guided running maps for land excursions. One class takes passengers on a tour of the ship's eateries, with pointers on the healthiest choices. For cruise enthusiasts like Linda Coffman, it all means no longer having to worry about gaining weight at sea."I always used to try to lose a few pounds in anticipation (of sailing), but I've found that's really not necessary," said Coffman, a 59-year-old travel writer who goes on cruises for both work and pleasure. While salads and lighter dishes have always been available, Coffman said the variety in choices now is impressive. The changes come at a time when the cruise industry is seeing steady but modest growth.

EPD warns residents of possible phone scam in area

The Eureka Police Department has received three phone calls from citizens regarding a phone scam.

EPD Public Information Officer Suzie Owsley said that if three residents have reported the scam, there are probably many more receiving the bogus offer.

The scam artist contacts residents and says he represents an international shipping company and that he will be shipping a package with money and prizes worth more than $10,000.

The caller attempts to ask for personal information, Owsley said. She reminds people not give out any personal information over the phone when on the receiving end of a call.

The best thing to do is to tell the caller, “no thank-you," and hang up, Owsley said.

NBA All-Star Game: Duncan is a fixture despite his style

His four championships in nine years make him the No. 1 NBA winner of the past 10 seasons. Though his scoring average for six seasons has been on a steady decline from his career-best 25.5 points per game in 2001-02 — it slipped all the way to 18.3 in '05-06 before a jump to 20.0 last season — his consistent excellence has remained.

"The better the team, the less important statistics are," said Hall of Fame center and ABC/ESPN analyst Bill Walton. "My guess is, as the team has gotten better and better and better, Tim's stats have gotten worse."

Of far greater importance, Walton said, is how Duncan has put his stamp on games. Few players in NBA history have had greater bearing on the outcome.

"In terms of impact and control, he has everything," Walton said.

Valad quells takeover talk

VALAD Property Group is entering a strategic alliance with another party that may involve the issue of Valad securities but will not involve a full takeover of the property investor.

Valad securities were placed in a trading halt today at the request of the company after they rose over 15 per cent on Friday on takeover speculation. "The trading halt is necessary as an announcement is expected to be made with respect to a proposed strategic alliance," Valad said in a statement to the Australian stock exchange. "The proposed terms of the strategic alliance will not involve a whole company offer being made for Valad but may involve an issue of securities by Valad," it added. Valad said it expected to make an announcement before 9am (AEDT) tomorrow. Reynolds & Co director Markus Muller said the motives of the company were wide open.

Market woes weigh on Hargreaves Lansdown

Hargreaves Lansdown, the stockbroker that floated last May at 160p, dropped below its launch price yesterday amid fears that it would issue a warning on growth with its first-half results due today.

The shares fell 9¾p to 158p as Investec reiterated its "sell" advice, saying that it expected the weak stock market to hit its flow of funds from investors. It said that its forecast target for the year to end-June of £12.8 billion under management looked challenging given that the market is off 10 per cent this year.

Resolution was the worst blue-chip performer, down 44p at 672p, hit by worries that the 720p-a-share takeover by Hugh Osmond’s Pearl Assurance could be scuppered at the eleventh hour by the Financial Services Authority. The watchdog was unhappy with the speed at which Pearl wanted to sell capital in Resolution’s life funds to repay its creditors.

If you cannot get them to redact it and they will not even listen to your side and they will not give you the name of your accuser so you might clear your self in court, what do you do? Post you side, ok what if your sponsors and lenders, maybe even your service providers now start to say hey I do not want to do business with you because of these allegations. Now what do you do? I do not know maybe they ARE slime and hooray for the brave whistleblower, if its all made up do we say better you than me? That's the 2 sides of anonymity. The people who host this type of stuff SHOULD be held responsible to verify as best they can BEFOR publication or they SHOULD pay if they are wrong.

Corzine slashes $500M from state budget

Gov. Jon Corzine today renewed his call to aggressively reduce state debt as he unveiled a $33 billion state budget that is $500 million less than the one he signed last June.

"This proposal asks for the second-largest spending cut of any budget in New Jersey history," Corzine said. He called it "a turning point in the fiscal management of our state" that rejects "the patterns of overspending and tortured borrowing that burden our taxpayers."

"New Jersey has a government its people cannot afford," Corzine said. Correcting that, he said, "requires many unpleasant choices" and "will inevitably mean reducing spending in areas that we all support."
