Between the Lines Latest Post | Last 10 Posts | Archives SaaS: Business model or feature? It depends Posted in: General Software Infrastructure SaaS SAP Salesforce.com NetSuite Software as a service is about to approach a crossroads in a few years and at issue is whether it becomes a dominant business model or a feature that becomes just another way for a vendor to deliver an application. To Salesforce.com and NetSuite SaaS is clearly the dominant business model–or at least will be in the future. And given Salesforce.com's recent financials it's hard to argue. However, massive software vendors–EMC, SAP (all resources), Oracle (via Siebel) and Symantec–are tossing in SaaS as an option.
Money: Shoppers' Finances Come Under Increasing Strain
Consumers' finances are coming under increasing strain with millions of bills going unpaid and four out of 10 people admitting they are now reliant on credit. A quarter of credit cardholders say they have started 2008 more dependent on credit than they were last year, a survey for the Post Office said. And 41% said they would be relying on their plastic to meet day-to-day living costs such as groceries. "Typically January is the time of year when people struggle with their money the most," said the Post Office's Gary Fitton. "Many people have over-stretched themselves over the Christmas period and have little choice but to use their credit card in the New Year." At the same time, research from financial website MoneyExpert.com found that an estimated 6.9m household bills were either paid late or went unpaid over the past six months.

In the world of online community, one authoritative man can dictate ...
"Cops'll smell your fingers," says Black Lips drummer Joe Bradley about the difficulty of staying out of trouble while on tour in Mexico. He should know. His volcanic Atlanta band documented a blowout show in Tijuana for its live album, Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo, released earlier this year to rave reviews. "There's actually a vital scene in Mexico, not that you'd know it," Bradley quips. Black Lips had played previously in Mexicali, but after a "powwow" with their new bosses at Vice Records, Tijuana was chosen for the sweaty setting of Los Valientes. The Black Lips managed to squeeze in one more album before 2007 ends. Their fourth studio showing in as many years, Good Bad Not Evil may be the best garage record since White Blood Cells. Country, psych, and blues are chewed up and spit out as gritty punk, every song blessed with rickety hooks, a swaggering rhythm section, Cole Alexander's frazzled sing-alongs, and an old-school aroma of smoke and reverb.

Romney suspends campaign
Mitt Romney announced he is suspending his presidential bid, all but annointing John McCain as the Republican nominee. In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, Romney said he didn't want a Democrat to win the White House. "If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and frankly I would be making it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. Frankly, in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," he said. "This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters... many of you right here in this room have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming President.
After Super Tuesday, Time for Peace Movement to Get Off the Sidelines
Shouldn't we be doing everything possible to make the candidates compete for the peace vote? Think of the battlegrounds ahead where the peace vote is up for grabs: Washington on February 9, Maryland and the District of Columbia February 12, Wisconsin February 19, Rhode Island, Vermont and Ohio on March 4, and other states like Oregon and Pennsylvania through May. On one side it appears that the pro-Democratic groups with millions of dollars are sitting out the primaries, saving their energy for the coming battle with John McCain. That plan just got delayed for many weeks as the primaries go on. On the other side are the grass-roots peace coalitions that generally forsake political engagement and busy themselves with plans for civil disobedience while 13 more states are voting.
