Blazing a new trail

Following a two-year stint in Germany during World War II, McCabe returned to Ganado, Ariz., on the Navajo reservation to a wife and children.

Prior to the war, McCabe married Alice Curley, of the Tachiinii tribe, in the 1930s. The pair raised 15 children together. McCabe worked as an artist and surveyor as Alice tended to the homestead. In her spare time, Alice was a shepherd with a knack for weaving.

While McCabe served overseas, the reservation suffered a severe work shortage. By the time he returned, no irrigation systems remained for farming. The only way to make a living was raising sheep and cattle, a far less lucrative venture than a prospering, small plantation.

McCabe had a wife and, at the time, two children to provide for. The proud father wanted his kids to have the best educational opportunities, which required a life-altering move.

'GMA' Warns Recession Fears Are Causing Arsons

Just when you thought the economic doom and gloom couldn't get any worse in the news, "Good Morning America" has determined recession is now causing arson.

"We have news this morning on the home foreclosure front, word that cash-strapped homeowners are taking desperate measures," ABC co-host Diane Sawyer said.

The February 11 "GMA" has determined "cash-strapped homeowners" are taking "desperate measures," that is they are burning down their homes to avoid foreclosure. That notion ABC's Bianna Golodryga based upon two isolated cases of anecdotal evidence.

One home supposedly burned because Sheryl Christman, a 38-year-old Michigan woman, was three days short of foreclosure. She pleaded no contest after the Sept. 1, 2007 arson. The other case was a Colorado arson where a man "may have" committed arson before an "imminent foreclosure."

Lice-removal salons big business in the US

HEAD lice removal salons are booming in the US, especially on the west coast where parents are out-sourcing one of the most time-consuming and perennial tasks of parenthood.

In Oakland, California, Melissa Shilliday started NitPixies with Dina Shields, a former teacher and fellow California mum, and it is at least the third San Francisco Bay area salon of its kind to open since last April.Lice infestations are an age-old problem for schools and families, and most parents still deal with them through chemical shampoos or cheap hair conditioner, combing out the parasites and eggs, and washing clothing and bedding. Hair Fairies in San Francisco and Love Bugs in Lafayette, California, are two more examples of such salons. For $US100 ($A111) an hour per head, NitPixies technicians in plastic caps comb through sections of hair, collecting small insects, living and dead, and white "nits" or eggs.

December 2007

In this subject Sarah earns a D, because she did wear lipstick once for a debate (there were many old ladies and some Republicans present), however miserable she looked. Actually, I am going to adjust that to a D-. I believe I speak for the majority of the Cape Codder's subscribers in saying that waking up to an oversized photo of Peake locking lips with her 56 year-old lesbian lover on the front pages of the paper is, well, naseating. Gross man, GROSS!

Peake also rymes with squeak. During her campaign she talked endlessly about how she was going to solve the housing crises. In her newspaper columns, mailings to voters, radio ads, debates, interviews and speeches, she told everyone "housing is my linchpin issue." She spent about $150,00.00 telling people that housing was her linchpin issue. For those of you who don't know what a linchpin is, it is a pin that binds a wheel to an axle for support and stability.

Traveler Alert: New Rules for Paying

Not too long ago, charging your way through a vacation abroad was the way to go. That's because credit cards have more favorable exchange rates and fees than banks and exchange bureaus. But new markups have made the charge-it strategy trickier. Many credit-card issuers have tripled the charges for foreign billings. They've been quietly adding new fees for the past few years--so quietly that consumers have sued Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, saying the markups were not properly disclosed. (Card issuers are now starting to break out the extra charges on statements.) .

ON STYLE

Miyake deserves credit for hiring several models of color, but he seemed nonplussed when I asked him about weight. He chose models who are "just suitable for our clothes," he repeated several times.

Bodies Formed to Fit Clothes

So we have bodies being formed to fit clothes, rather than clothes designed to fit bodies.

With online tickets, it's buyer be careful

Buying tickets for shows, concerts and sporting events online is akin to walking a virtual tightrope, with box offices and authorized companies on one side and ticket scalpers on the other. Fall on the wrong side and you will likely have to deal with outrageous prices and refused refunds.

To avoid getting fleeced by shady ticket sellers, which often disguise themselves as legitimate Web sites, heed these six tips from AARP magazine author Laura Daily:

1 Go to the source

Don't just do an Internet search for "Cowboys tickets." You could be lured to a site that looks real but is actually a scalper in disguise. Always visit an event's official Web site or call the venue directly.

2 Join the club

Sign up for alerts, venue memberships and fan clubs that move you to the head of the line.
