| Great Firewall Of Japan? Japan Proposes Regulating The Internet
In Japan, courts do not enforce claims of slander, libel, or personal threats. People can make up false accusations about you, post your financial and medical records online, post your credit card number, falsified "criminal records" about you, issue death threats, threaten to burn down your house, call your workplace to spread accusations, do whatever they want. (Of course, Techdirt applauds this sort of "freedom" for people to behave however they please.) This behavior takes place most famously on "2ch" servers hosted in California. As for "political dissent" in Japan, if it can be called that, it is all about skinheads who post racial hate and complain that the government is too pro-foreign and pro-global-economy. They are not government agents, they are unemployed lowlives whose only outlet is the computer screen and kiddie porn.
Obama: Beware 'Reverse Bradley'
And why do the whippernsappers always have to lecture? ... P.S.: The whole post isn't this bad. It's actually worse. And pompous! ... [via Corner and reader N.B.] ... 9:19 P.M. ___________________________ Mo' Iowa: 1) Polipundit suggests Obama may have benefitted in Iowa from a "reverse Bradley effect.' The open, public voting of the caucuses provided Democrats with "a golden opportunity to show your next-door neighbors just how enlightened and progressive you are, by supporting the liberal black candidate." On a secret ballot, Obama wouldn't do as well. If the Reverse Bradley Effect holds, then, Obama will do worse in New Hampshire than his Iowa triumph would lead you to expect, even if Hillary does nothing to change anyone's mind. ...

(Editor's Note: Northwest Airlines initially told the P-I last Friday that the suspect was not an employee of the company. It later confirmed that he was. Earlier versions of this article reflected the original, erroneous information.) No College Left Behind?
Much of the concern within The Academy disappears when one realizes that the University that was is not the university of today.- the concern over testing becomes a different question when one understands that school is really K-16 and faculty in grades 13-16 are expected to provide the same as teachers in K-12 or at least 10-12. - faculty, too, are in new roles and in many disciplines, particularly outside the natural sciences, are being questions, not just from the outside (conservative vs liberal) but from within their own disciplines; economics, political science and literature or the humanities in general are good examples -both faculty and now student qualifications are increasingly being questioned both from within and outside the institutions as are the instutions themselves as commodification and market forces have breached the walls of the ivory tower.

Sniper cracks 50-goal mark on way to hat trick: `Everything just went ...
WASHINGTON–Alexander Ovechkin's slump is over. After scoring one goal in his previous eight games, Ovechkin had a hat trick in the Washington's six-goal first period and finished with five points in the Capitals' 10-2 win over the Boston Bruins last night. Ovechkin hadn't scored in seven consecutive games before notching a goal in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Toronto. He broke loose against the Bruins with three goals and two assists to spark Washington, which jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the way to a season-high 10 goals. "Today, everything just went to the net," Ovechkin said. "You are going to score (in) lots of games, and some you (won't). I always tell myself not to think about goals and to just play how I can." Ovechkin's three goals gave him a league-leading 52, matching his career high, and made him the first player in the NHL to reach 50 goals this season.
