Defending Constellation

Bush will leave when his final term ends next January. It's not something novel to this administration, of course: the same ruminations took place eight years ago in the final year of the Clinton Administration, and twenty years ago as the Reagan Administration wound down.

Nor are such discussions limited to the presidency and front-page issues. Many in the space community believe that NASA administrator Mike Griffin is in his final year (or so) in office, unlikely to be retained regardless of who takes the presidential oath of office next January 20th. If true, what sort of legacy will Griffin leave NASA? It may be a little premature to make those judgments now, but clearly one of the biggest impacts Griffin had on NASA, and the future of American human spaceflight, was his implementation of the Vision for Space Exploration.

So much for a quiet family dinner

Assault on a peace officer, attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer and resisting arrest, 4817 N.W. Stallings Drive, Kinfolks.

As Precinct 3 constable, Roger Dudley, was having dinner with his family, a man walked in and began arguing with Kinfolk employees. The man, Elmer Christopher Woodard, 28, of 1317 FM 843, saw Dudley's constable car and demanded to know who he was. When he identified himself, Woodard went over and began arguing with him, the report said. NPD was called and once officers arrived, a fight broke out between Woodard and the officers, when he attempted to take one of the officer's weapons, according to the report.

The constable received an injury to his hand during the scuffle, and Woodard was arrested.

Science JAXA Satellite Promises to Pump Worldwide Internet Speeds

Satellites don't use visible light, but they do use radio waves, which travel at lightspeed. The rest of the latency is due to switching delays in the satellite itself...a factor which can be nearly eliminated, and probably will be in newer satellites. .

Screen opinion - Rightsize Matters

Amazon this week decided to dump its DVD online rental service in favour of a slice of European player LoveFilm, which has also developed a promising downloads service with US studio support. And of course there's the Microsoft/Yahoo deal, in which online entertainment is a significant factor.

But all of this leaves serious opportunities for smaller players. If the mass market requires consolidation, the niche opportunities of an increasingly long-tail business require agility and focus. The global conglomerates cannot hope to monopolise talent or profitable niche markets.

Smaller players with smart business plans and an enthusiasm for new forms of distribution will play an important role in taking the YouTube generation into the business realm. A new production company from Beastie Boys producer Adam Yauch illustrates the point.

Florida sues Coral Springs lawyer's debt managment services

The Florida Attorney General's economic crimes division filed suit Thursday against a Coral Springs lawyer, her practice and two companies she controls, alleging they deceptively marketed debt management services.

Attorney Laura Hess is behind Hess Kennedy Chartered LLC and the Consumer Law Center, according to state regulators. The center's Web site claims it negotiates reduced debt payments for clients to help them avoid bankruptcy and reviews their statements for inappropriate charges that can be removed.

But court documents filed in Broward County Circuit Court say the defendants falsely told their clients they no longer had to pay their creditors while the charges were disputed, resulting in some clients being sued for the debts or facing legal action. The suit claims the companies also misrepresented what portion of money consumers initially paid toward debt settlements were actually nonrefundable retainers and fees, and did not forward payments to creditors as promised.

As the going gets tough, DJs aims higher

UPMARKET department store David Jones is aiming even higher in a move to insulate its business from the expected downturn in retail spending over the next few years.

The retailer's 2009-2012 strategic plan released yesterday is aimed at using the spending slowdown to cement its position at the head of the pack ahead of an forecast upturn in the retail environment from 2011.

DJs said a greater focus on cost cutting and margin growth would allow it to maintain annual profit growth of 5-10 per cent despite flatish sales growth throughout the three-year period.

The centrepieces of the plan are a credit card alliance with American Express, the opening of four to eight new stores in high spending locations, and refurbishment of up to 14 of its most profitable stores.
